this is the bay area's news station, kron 4 news at 11:00 p.m., starts now. >> new at 11:00 p.m., 200 workers are taking part in a strike at the port of oakland and the oakland international airport. workers walked off the job at 9:30 p.m. they are protesting what they claim are unfair labor

practices. it is not expected to disrupt travel at the airport but port officials are concerned it could cause disruptions at the harbor. thousandsthousands of nurses set to walk off the job tomorrow by the california nurses association. registered nurses at 8 hospitals operated by sutter hospitals and two san jose hospitals, hospital corporation of america, will go on strike at 7:00 a.m. they are upset about staffing, sick leave and other issues. the strike at sutter hospitals is planned for two days. the strike at the san jose hospital set for one day. the hospitals have hired replacements on a 5 day contract. officials say because of the contracts the striking nurses will not be allowed to return to work till sunday. in a game that was supposed

to feature two of the top ranked defenses in the nfl, the 49ers without alex smith, jumped all over the bears, winning 32-7. back up quarterback was terrific out dueling jason campbell. 243 yards, 2 touchdowns, while the 49ers rolled. coming up, gary will have highlights and more on the question, will he start next week over alex myth -- smith. a 65-year-old woman kidnapped sexually assaulted, left by the road, the suspect only 14 and today we are getting our first look at him. still photos were allowed in court today. he made his first court appearance. they will try hip as an adult

because -- try him as an adult. he approached the woman, kidnapped, sexually assaulted her, she was left on the side of the road and found hours later. the suspect was caught when he went back to the crime scene. >> terisa estacio reports. >> reporter: he seemed relaxed as he stood by his attorney during the hearing. the judge allowed still photos to be taken. when asked how to pronounce his name he spoke up quickly and confidently. when bail was announced he smiled. and then looked down to hide his emotions. he is facing 10 counts, 6 life sentences if convicted. following the hearing his family refused to talk with

kron 4 news, two men ran out of the courthouse. these family members also declined to talk and they covered their faces. >> reporter: comments about your son or -- >> reporter: have you been in trouble before with the law? >> reporter: the hearing lasted a few minutes so that bail could be set. he did not enter a plea. that may happen next week. terisa estacio, kron 4 news. there is some concern over the type of pipe that chevron is planning to use to replace the one that broke last august causing the fire. as kron 4's dan kerman reports, investigators are not convinced they are using the best available technology. >> reporter: preliminary findings suggest corrosion caused the pipe to rupture. they asked for a permit to replace the pipe with something

better. 9% chromium steel alloy. but they aren't sure that is what is best. >> this alloy is 9 chrome, can be susceptible to what is called sulfaidation corrosion. >> the same type of pipe was involved in a fire in washington state. >> that doesn't prove it is not a good choice but it prompts more question about corrosion. >> reporter: they want chevron to explain why they are not using stainless steel with 18% chromium. >> hard to predict how fast corrosion occurs. that is why it is so important to use the safest possible materials in the piping. they have issued chevron a

the possibility of the oakland police department being put under federal control is growing closer. now an attorney says it is unfair to blame the rank and file for the department's failure. they had 10 years to make the changes. >> the question is, is anyone above the rank of sergeant lieutenant, are they being held accountable. i am talking about the entire city of oaklanded and their officials. -- oakland and their officials. are they being held accountable. the seem who supervise the cops, everyone in the city of

carjacking. >> he was an innocent victim doing what we have done many times, stopping at a store for a soda, coffee, snack, whatever. and he lost his life doing so. >> reporter: at a news conference police and the mayor announced a $20,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the man in this sketch. between 20 and 25-year-old african american or latino, 6 feet tall, 200 pounds. a second suspect, 26-year-old jonathan wilbanks was arrested friday following a string of armed robberies across san jose. ending in a gun battle with police during which one officer was shot but escaped serious injury, saved by a mace bottle in his belt. >> if not for the canister we would be talking a different thing here right now besides

there either. rain, wind, and rain and wind for wednesday. snow levels above 7,000 feet. extended forecast, tomorrow night into wednesday is the main event. light showers possible in the morning in the north bay tomorrow and thanksgiving, sunny and mild. and that weather continues into the weekend. possible rescue for twinkie. they will go into mediation, they are not going to be going out of business yet. the company is in bankruptcy and was in court trying to liquidate siting a strike. the judge says both parties still need to talk. and the 49ers dominate the bears in a monday night football match-up. did jim harbaugh stir up a quarterback controversy with his remarks? gary has the story next.
